What Is Sclerotherapy and How Does It Work?

Spider veins are small, visible blood vessels that commonly appear on the legs. They may look like thin red, blue, or purple lines that branch out just beneath the skin's surface. Although these veins are often harmless, their appearance can become a cosmetic concern for many individuals.

Fortunately, there is a treatment designed to reduce their appearance: sclerotherapy.

At Amelia James Aesthetics in Naperville, we specialize in cosmetic spider vein treatment, offering personalized care to help patients achieve clearer-looking skin.

What Is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is an injection treatment used to treat spider veins and some reticular veins.

During treatment, a specialized solution called polidocanol is injected directly into the targeted vein using a very fine needle.

The solution causes the vein to close, allowing the body to gradually break down and absorb the treated vessel.

Over time, the visible vein fades, improving the appearance of the skin.

How Does Sclerotherapy Work?

The process is straightforward, but understanding what happens beneath the skin can help explain why results take time.

The treatment process

  1. Step 1: Polidocanol is injected

A fine needle is used to carefully inject a sclerosant directly into the targeted spider vein.

  2. Step 2: The vein begins to close

The solution irritates the inner lining of the vein, causing its walls to become damaged and close together.

  3. Step 3: Blood is redirected

Once the treated vein closes, blood naturally flows through other healthy veins.

  4. Step 4: The vein gradually fades

Over the following weeks, the body breaks down and absorbs the closed vein, making it progressively less visible.

Unlike treatments that simply conceal spider veins, sclerotherapy targets the visible vessel itself.

What Happens During a Sclerotherapy Appointment?

At Amelia James Aesthetics, treatment begins with an individualized consultation to assess your veins, review your medical history, and determine whether cosmetic sclerotherapy is appropriate for you.

If treatment is recommended, the area is cleansed, and a fine needle is used to inject the solution directly into the targeted veins.

The number of injections depends on the size, location, and number of veins being treated.

How Long Does It Take to See Results?

One of the most important things to understand about sclerotherapy is that results are gradual.

Treated veins do not always disappear immediately. In fact, they may initially appear darker or irritated before they begin to fade.

Many patients begin seeing improvement within approximately 4–6 weeks, although some veins may take several months to fully respond.

The timeline varies depending on the size of the veins, individual healing, and the extent of treatment.

Multiple sessions may be recommended to achieve the desired cosmetic outcome. Complete clearance cannot be guaranteed.

What Is Recovery Like?

One of the advantages of sclerotherapy is that it generally requires little downtime.

Walking is encouraged after treatment to promote circulation. However, some temporary activity modifications are necessary to support healing.

At Amelia James Aesthetics, our post-treatment instructions generally include:

  • Compression stockings: Wear 20–30 mmHg stockings continuously for the first 24 hours, followed by daytime wear for an additional 13 days.

  • Exercise: Avoid strenuous exercise for approximately two weeks.

  • Travel: Avoid flying for approximately two weeks.

  • Sun exposure: Protect treated areas from direct sun exposure for approximately four weeks.

These recommendations may be adjusted based on your treatment and medical history.

Mild bruising, tenderness, or temporary discoloration may occur after treatment. Less common complications include skin injury, allergic reactions, or blood clots. Your provider should review these risks before treatment.
